She was born in Murphy, N.C. and in 1944 her family moved to Oak Ridge, Tenn., where her father, the late W.C. Collins, worked as a welder on the Calutrons at Y-12, as well as on “the moon box” that was sent to the moon to bring back rock samples.

Shirley graduated from Oak Ridge High School in 1960 and married her husband, the late Michael L. Stallo, in 1965. She was passionate about environmental conservation and animal rights. In 1972, she started a weekly column in the local newspaper titled “Pet Talk,” and she worked tirelessly to help found the Humane Society of Anderson County in that same year. Her column ran from 1972 to 1977 and covered topics ranging from basic domestic pet care to wild animal conservation. Shirley also had a wonderful sense of style and loved beautiful clothes and jewelry. In the early 1990’s, Shirley ran a successful dress shop near Jackson Square, “Shirley’s Plus Fashions.”

She was an avid reader and culinary adventurist. Shirley was a loving wife, mother, and friend. She maintained close ties with a group of friends from her childhood and greatly enjoyed lunch dates with them as often as she could. They sometimes referred to themselves as “The Golden Girls.”

Shirley is preceded in death by father, W.C. Collins and her husband, Michael L. Stallo, both of Oak Ridge.

She is survived by son, Michael Stallo; granddaughter, Rachael Stallo; mother, Evelyn Collins; brother, David Collins, all of Oak Ridge; brother, Clay Collins of Ooltewah; an extended group of family and friends and one adored Chihuahua.

There are no plans for a memorial service at this time; any forthcoming plans will be announced at a later date. The family asks that any expressions of sympathy be made in the form of a donation to local animal rescue groups or for the cause of environmental conservation.
